It helps to say which device and system version you are on, and, where the question is about a specific model, which BIM tool exported the file.
Frequently asked questions
Which devices does the app run on?
IFC View is a single app for Mac, iPad and iPhone. It needs macOS 14 or later, or iPadOS and iOS 17 or later. One download, one purchase: the Pro upgrade is shared across your devices through your Apple Account.
What files are supported?
.ifc (IFC2x3 and IFC4) and .ifczip models from any BIM authoring tool, such as Revit, ArchiCAD, Tekla or Vectorworks, plus .glb models and IFC View share packages. It also reads IDS specifications and BCF topic files.
What is included in the free version?
Opening and inspecting any model, the object tree, properties and quantities, search, filters, levels, selection sets, distance measurement, the X section plane, notes with photos, circles and freehand markup, reading BCF topics and the bSDD lookup. One model at a time.
What does the Pro version unlock?
Tabs and windows, Y and Z section planes, area and angle measurement, exploded view, federation, clash detection, IDS checking, revision comparison, quantity take-off, 4D schedule, smart views, saved and shared views, property editing, and every export: BCF, image, PDF report, 3D PDF, USDZ, OBJ, STL, GLB, CSV, Excel, COBie and share packages. It is a single one-time in-app purchase, with no subscription.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every Pro feature, free for 14 days, once per Apple Account. It asks for no payment details, never renews and never charges; if you don't buy, the app goes back to the free features and keeps your notes and markups.
What does Pro cost?
A single purchase, with no subscription: €29.99 in Portugal, and the App Store's equivalent in other countries. It covers your Mac, iPad and iPhone.
How do I unlock Pro?
Through the in-app purchase, available from any screen with a locked feature.
Can I open several models together?
Yes, with Pro. Federated loading combines several IFC files into one scene, so disciplines can be reviewed side by side, and clash detection works across them. The three sample models are there to try it.
Can it check a model against an IDS?
Yes, with Pro. Open the .ids file and every specification shows how many elements pass and fail, with the failures highlighted in the model. Rules the app cannot evaluate yet (such as partOf) are marked "not evaluated" instead of passing.
Can it find clashes between disciplines?
Yes, with Pro. Load the architecture and add the structure or services model to the scene; clash detection works across the federated models and exports each clash as a BCF topic.
Does it work in feet and inches?
Yes. Measurements and levels can be shown in metric or imperial units.
Which languages?
English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German and Italian. The translations were prepared with the help of AI; if you spot a mistake, please tell us at hello@byn.pt.
How do I change the app's language?
IFC View follows the language your device uses, or the one you choose for the app alone: on iPhone and iPad in Settings > IFC View > Language, on the Mac in System Settings > General > Language & Region > Applications. The Language… item in the app's menu takes you there.
How do I open a model?
From Finder or the Files app, from Mail, from any app that can share a document, or from within IFC View itself.
Does the app need the internet?
No. It only goes online for the App Store purchase and, if you use it, the bSDD classification lookup, which sends only the words you search for.
How do I restore my Pro purchase?
Use the restore option on any screen showing a locked feature. The purchase is tied to your Apple Account and works on all your devices. A trial that was already used is restored too, so it cannot be started twice.
